Merchant blocks

Kit automatically blocks some merchant categories, such as those associated with alcohol, gambling, and tobacco. Your child will be unable to use their Kit card in any store where these categories apply, regardless of what they are buying.

Transaction declined incorrectly due to merchant block?

Merchants are categorised by a merchant category code. If a shop is incorrectly listed under a category the transaction will decline even if the purchase itself seems fine.

As merchant category codes (MCC) are set up between the merchant and their bank, Kit is unable to manually unblock or allow specific stores.

If you think a merchant has been incorrectly blocked, let the store know so they can update their merchant category with their bank.

Blocking other merchants

You can block other merchants after your child has made a purchase there. For chain stores, Kit will only block the individual store linked to the transaction.

  1. Open the Kit app.
  2. Navigate to your child’s profile. You can do this by entering your Boss profile then tapping on your child’s name, or selecting the child’s profile on the ‘Who’s there?’ screen.
  3. Tap on the ‘Spend’ tab.
  4. Tap on the transaction to open the transaction screen.
  5. Tap ‘Block merchant’ and follow the prompts.

To unblock a merchant, you can unblock from the transaction screen using the steps above or from Settings:

  1. Open the Kit app.
  2. Enter the Boss profile.
  3. Tap on the menu icon.
  4. Go to ‘(Child’s) settings’.
  5. Tap on ‘Blocked merchants’.
  6. Tap the icon next to the merchant to unblock them.
